Obligatory Update

Author corey    Category News     Tags

Yes, I did have to spell check “obligatory”.

It’s quiet a mental exercise to come up with interesting stuff to write about. Sometimes there’s plenty going on that I just can’t wait to write about it. Other times, like now, I’m just drifting along – waiting for that next exciting thing to occur.

Let’s do a run down of the most exciting thing that happened each day last week:

  • Monday – ate lunch
  • Tuesday – watched Gilmore Girls
  • Wednesday – went to dinner with Sheila N at Big Bowl
  • Thursday – got a haircut and Jeremy V bought a GBA SP
  • Friday – had dinner at Bayou Bob’s
  • Saturday – lost $30 gambling in Central City with Matt F
  • Sunday – pieced together an air hockey table for my (many) siblings

As you can tell, Thursday and Saturday were very exciting days indeed. Though I did have fun going to dinner with my friends.

I’m hoping this week will be even more exciting than the last!

My good friend Isaac got mentioned (along with his band) in Westword. See the ‘It’s a small world, after all‘ section. It’s interesting to see someone else’s thoughts on a long time friend of yours.

If you live in Denver and get a chance to see The Fray, please do!

Congratulations to my co-worker, and fellow antagonist, Sara and her husband on their newest (and first) addition to their family.

Our children are watching us live, and what we are shouts louder than anything we can say.

Counting the Cost

Author corey    Category Flying     Tags

I knew when I started to fly in earnest that it was going to be expensive. But, seeing as I was newly back from the Gulf, I was living with my mom and had some excess money because I wasn’t paying any rent. So that worked out well, I got my first 25-30 hours within a couple months.

Now, especially since this is the first month I’ve had to pay the mortgage on my new house, I’m so low on cash that I can’t even entertain the idea of flight. At least, not a flight I have to pay for. But my cross country! Argh!

So, it looks like I’m going to have to go the loan route. Apparently, you can get a student loan for flying. As long as you do what the flight school determines as full or part time (the guy at McAir said full time was one flight a week for them) then you can get a nice low interest loan.

I plan(ned) on going back to school in Spring. Maybe I should forget that for now and just get a big(ger) loan and go all the way with flying? Heck, getting a commercial rating for rotorcraft (helicopters) is only $40,000. Pocket change.

Some days it’s great to be an American..

Like today.

It’s days like these I’m glad I joined the Air National Guard. After taking a boring (but informative) chemical/biological warfare protection refresher course I was walking back to our shop with my crew and happened to look behind me.

Wow.

OK, I’m no stranger to seeing F-16s haul ass (400 knots or more?) at 500ft above the ground. But, seeing a 4-ship diamond formation flying at 400kts on the deck and then executing a perfect 45 degree banking turn directly over your head – wow. And then another. Lucky SOBs.

I love this country. Except for the justice system. And the politics. And the bureaucracy. And the unappreciative citizens…
