One of those updates
Ouray is a pretty cool place, at least during the off season. We missed the ice climbing season and the summer tours season. While it was nice not having to fight for elbow room at the Orvis Hot Springs (a destination I highly recommend) the town was a bit of ghost town. Stores were closed for the season, and I couldn’t find a place to rent a 4×4 to save my life. Not that the 4×4 trails were open, so I couldn’t even take my new truck if I wanted to.
Yes, I got a new truck. Don’t ask. Ok, you can. Just don’t expect me to say anything other than one of the following:
- I’ve always wanted a truck
- My car was a POS
- I got a good deal on it
- I have a toy (my motorcycle), nice to have something to haul stuff
Btw, truck accessories are expensive! I guess I’ve never really bought toys for my cars before, so it was a new experience for me. Even the new blinkers/fender for my motorcycle were only $20-$40 a set. Of course, my jacket and helmet both cost $300+ apiece .. I feel very materialistic right now: all my vehicles have temp tags! And I just bought a lawn mower, for Pete’s sake!
Back in Ouray, the hot springs were really cool (Actually, some of them were pretty darn hot. I think he said 110 in the hottest?). Since we stayed at the hot springs themselves (in their little motel rooms) we had 24 hour access to the hot springs. Soaking in a hot spring at 10pm with just the stars in the middle of a mountain valley is quite a relaxing experience. The place is only about 5.5 hours from Denver, so it can be done in a weekend.
On the way to and fro, we passed through Fairplay which is a teeny town in the middle of a huge glacial plain. With an altitude of over 9900ft it was one of the highest towns we went through. Even the town of Silverton wasn’t as high, but Silverton is in a valley between 14,000ft mountains: makes for a gorgeous view. Too bad property in Ouray is so damn expensive.
On an unrelated note: Avs, learn to freakin’ skate! Practice passing!
Not much else is happening in these parts. Getting some more spring weather after a nice snowfall that lasted over 24 hours last week. Gearing up for my trip to Iraq and just generally chilling. Oh, I do have a test this weekend for my 5 Level in Aircraft Armament Systems, wish me luck!
